Road Scholar Experiences & Cultural Adventures in the Blue Ridge MountainsRoad Scholar (formally Elderhostel) is a not-for-profit organization that provides educational travel opportunities for older adults. Road Scholar tours are hosted throughout the United States and in 150 countries. Programs take place across the globe and cover a diversity of experiences and activities, from hiking in our National Parks to exploring art museums in Paris. Mountain Lake Lodge hosts three different Road Scholar programs each year.
The Appalachian Experience:Guests feel at home as they are immersed in the culture and history of the Appalachian people. Highlights of this trip include dancing to a fiddle, listening to folktales, blacksmithing, and nature walks in the heart of the scenic Appalachian Mountains.
Something for Everyone:Birding at Any Level in the Appalachians of Virginia is a small group program designed to accommodate anyone from first time birders to the most experienced. This program is offered twice a year during the spring and fall migrations. You will be able to add many new species to your birding list.
Astronomy: The Universe and BeyondThis is a less active program designed to challenge your mind as you explore black holes, our solar system, and the constellations. Participants get to use a wide variety of telescopes, wear special glasses to view the sun's solar flares, and visit the planetariums and observatories of local universities.
