The Gateway to Southwest Virginia: 5 Reasons To Visit Mountain Lake Lodge This Summer

Many people know of Mountain Lake Lodge from its role as "Kellerman's Mountain House" in the 1987 cult classic "Dirty Dancing." In 2024, it's known as the gateway to Southwest Virginia.

Mountain Lake Lodge is located about 25 minutes from Blacksburg, Virginia in the mountains of Giles County. In the early 1800s, the property was a stop along the public stagecoach line providing lodging for passengers. Today, the lodge is a thriving resort and attracts those seeking to retreat and immerse themselves in nature.

Here are some five new activities the resort is offering this summer:

Guided Hikes to the Cascades

Mountain Lake's former owner, Mary Moody Northen, wanted the property to be a place where the public could appreciate nature in its true form. The resort supports this vision by offering guided hikes with views that are unrivaled by any other resort or hotel in Virginia and the surrounding states. One of those hikes is to Cascade Falls in Pembroke, one of the most popular hiking destinations in Virginia with about 150,000 visitors every year.

Guided Fishing Trips

Mountain Lake strives to offer guests immersive experiences during their summer vacation, engaging with a wide array of wildlife both on land and beneath the surface of the water! To make that vision a reality, the resort partners with Orvis, a retailer known for producing best-in-class fly fishing equipment, to offer guided fly fishing tours on the New River.  While fly-fishing can be an intimidating endeavor for the uninitiated, the trips are very accessible. For a full day, participants are given rods, flies, drinks, and most importantly…food.

Immersive Art Experiences:

Known for its splendid views and picturesque hiking trails, Mountain Lake also features an immersive art studio. The studio offers a wide variety of activities, including acrylic, clay, watercolor, oil pastel, and ink, all coming with a sketchbook and instructional manual, making the experience accessible for those looking for inspiration and kids of all ages. Guests can even book weekend classes with a talented local artist who guides them through creating their artistic vision on an 11x14 canvas.

Nature Center

Are you interested in learning more about the animals that call Mountain Lake home? Our nature center offers engaging reptile/amphibian presentations, allowing guests to even handle animals such as snakes and skinks. You heard that right…we said to hold them.

Unique Excursions

Mountain Lake takes pride in being a part of the Giles County community. The property values the surrounding area's history so much, that they offer tours off the mountain to show visitors displays of nature and secret spots only known to locals.

Resort Values

Mountain Lake separates itself from other resorts in Virginia by having a unique sense of purpose. Not just to bring guests closer to nature and their families, but to serve them as if they are family. The lodge has a saying that exudes Southern hospitality "Come as friends, leave as family." To some, this could come off as a bumper sticker phrase, but the staff lives out that mission daily.
